This month's rout in smallcap stocks has erased the Russell 2000's sparkling first quarter gain, and the benchmark index for smaller shares could face further trouble ahead so long as interest rates are left unchanged. UBS has named a raft of European small and midcap stocks it says are staging a "comeback in the making" this year. Smaller European stocks returned 0.5% in July and August, outperforming the 1.7% contraction logged by large caps in the same period, the Swiss investment bank noted. On average, stocks on UBS' list of small and mid-cap stocks were up 6.6% year-to-date, beating the MSCI European Smallcap Index by 1.2 percentage points, according to the bank. Stock picks Italian cement and ready-mix company Buzzi is among UBS' top picks, given its year-to-date performance of 53.4%. New on the radar UBS' list has also undergone a refresh to include three new stocks: Galenica , SIG Group and Talgo.

IT, auto stocks help Indian shares hit new highs

BENGALURU, June 30 (Reuters) - Information technology (IT) and auto stocks helped India's benchmark indexes hit fresh record highs on Friday, after robust economic data from the United States eased fears of a slowdown and improved broader sentiment. Reuters GraphicsThe Nifty 50 (.NSEI) rose as much as 1.21% to hit an all-time high of 19,201.70, before closing at 19,189.05. The S&P BSE Sensex (.BSESN) also gained 1.26% to settle at a fresh record of 64,718.56. The Nifty 50 (.NSEI) has risen over 10.5% in the three months ended June 30, its best performance since the September quarter of 2021. Midcaps (.NIFMDCP100) also hit a fresh record while smallcaps (.NIFSMCP100) hovered around their 52-week high.

Financials (.SPSY) led the gainers after the Federal Reserve's stress test showed U.S. lenders have adequate capital to weather an economic storm. Treasury yields rose, with 10-year yields touching their highest level since early March after economic reports painted a picture of a solid U.S. economy, promoting the "higher for longer" scenario with respect to restrictive monetary policy. The dollar touched a two-week high against a basket of world currencies as upbeat economic data provided cushion to the Fed to continue raising rates. Oil prices posted modest gains as the solid economic data suggested strong demand and a steeper-than-expected drop in U.S. crude inventories.

The FTSE 100 (.FTSE) rose 0.5%, while the FTSE 250 (.FTMC) added 1.1% by 0841 GMT. With a day left for the end of the first quarter of the year, the FTSE 100 is on track for gains of 2%, while the mid-cap index is likely to have a muted end. Top performing sectors this quarter include the FTSE 350 aerospace and defence (.FTNMX502010), construction and materials (.FTNMX501010) and retailers (.FTNMX404010). The FTSE 350 Automobiles and Parts sector (.FTNMX401010) added 2.5% and is among top-performing sectors this quarter. Moonpig Group PLC (MOONM.L) added 17.9% after the online card retailer said it expects revenue to expand across 2024.
"A regime change, if you will, is taking place in the market, where small caps are going to do better," said Francis Gannon, co-chief investment officer at Royce Investment Partners, which focuses on small caps. Now investors are pointing to the recent rally as proof that small caps are on the verge of a prolonged period of outperformance. 'Massively outperform' Michael Sesser, equity portfolio manager of the $558-million DWS Small Cap Core fund, believes small caps will "massively outperform" large caps over the next five to 10 years. Cantaloupe , a retail service digital payments company with a $373 million market cap, and medical imaging provider RadNet ($1.2 billion market cap) are among Sesser's picks. DWS Small Cap also owns metallurgical coal producers serving the steel industry, namely Alpha Metallurgical Resources ($2.7 billion market cap), Arch Resources ($2.6 billion market cap) and Peabody Energy ($4.2 billion market cap).
